Testing for first Honda electric scooter in India to start later this year
As India’s EV market continues to gather momentum at a rapid pace, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India is getting into position to join the race. It is not news that the company has been working on an electric scooter for India; in fact, the company had previously also confirmed it will launch its upcoming electric scooter in India by 2023. However, during a recent interaction with PTI, the company’s executive did reveal some intriguing new information about the development of this upcoming Honda scooter in India. The report claims the company intends to start the feasibility testing for the upcoming electric scooter in India with its dealer partners from the end of the festive season this year.
Atsushi Ogata, President, Managing Director, and CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, said, “We have made a commitment to launch (EV product) within the next financial year.” As for testing this upcoming electric two wheeler in the countr, Ogata said the company has not started testing the product in India yet, “but after Diwali…we will set up the feasibility study officially at our dealerships.”
Interestingly, the company has offered absolutely no hint about which scooter or two-wheelers will become part of the company’s efforts to offer battery-powered two-wheelers here. There has been some talk about Honda testing the the BENLY e electric scooter at the Automotive Research Association of India. It must be noted that at its debut, Benly e was decsribed as being intended for commercial purposes. What about popular Honda two-wheelers in India such as Activa? Well, we may say ‘never say never’, but the company has made absolutely no indication that it intends to offer an EV version of the Honda Activa at any point.
