Downtown Hit-and-Run Driver Who Injured 2 People on Scooter Sought – NBC 7 San Diego Leave a comment

Police in San Diego are searching for the driver who struck and seriously injured two people riding a scooter before taking off from the scene in downtown’s East Village.

The San Diego Police Department said the hit-and-run was reported shortly after 4 a.m. near the intersection of 13th and Market Streets. There, a man and a woman in their 20s were traveling on the same electric scooter when they were hit by a white Ford Explorer, according to SDPD.

Authorities said the driver took off from the scene, leaving both victims on the road with major injuries. One of the victims was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital while the other was transported to UC San Diego Health. Both are expected to survive.

One neighbor, who did not want his identity revealed, told NBC 7 that he is frustrated with how ruthless drivers in the neighborhood are with pedestrians.

“It’s scary being out here because that happens at all hours of the day, not just really early in the morning,” he said. “People run red lights, people don’t care. And especially if they’re coming here to a Padres game, I mean, it is scary out here to be a pedestrian so I’m not shocked that this happened. I’m saddened that this happened.”

SDPD Sgt. Robert McDonald said the driver’s biggest mistake was not staying behind to help.

Officers are continuing to search for the driver of the Ford. The vehicle is expected to have significant damage to its front end.

On Monday evening, SDPD said they found a vehicle that may have been involved in the crash and detained the driver.
