This Electric Scooter Brings Power At A Reasonable Price Leave a comment


For this column, I have tested various electric kick scooters the past few years. Many of them didn’t impress me. One did recently, but it cost $1,000 — which is frankly rather pricey for an electric scooter. But for the past two weeks, I’ve been previewing Yadea’s new KS5 model that officially debuts today. It costs $639.

I live in a hilly area with streets so steep that many scooters I’ve tried can’t make it up a street or two without me having to step off and manually kick-push it. Not the KS5. It’s a workhorse featuring a 350W rear wheel motor with enough torque to climb 20 percent grade hills without struggling.

I’ve had no problem reaching 19 miles per hour going up the steepest of our hills on the KS5. And as you might imagine, going downhill I’ve topped off at 28 before realizing I was going too fast. Then I just tapped on the triple-braking system. This Electric Combination Braking System consists of a front drum brake, rear disc brake and electric brake, to give you enhanced control and responsiveness while enabling fast braking. It works great — without jarring you forward and making you feel as if you’re going to fly over the handlebars. Cruising around is super smooth, too, as front shock absorbers help reduce the bumpiness when riding over gravel or potholes. And the solid, 10-inch tires won’t ever go flat or get punctured.

The machine is relatively quiet, compared to others I’ve tried. And frankly it just feels sturdier. The 41-pound unit arrives in a box. The only thing I needed to assemble was the handlebars. It took all of a few minutes. The neck is quite sleek-looking and feels well built. And the footboard deck is large and wide, and sports built-in nubs that keep feet from slipping. By default, the rear light goes on when the scooter is powered up. And I can easily turn on the headlight if I just double-tap the power button. It’s plenty bright enough to light up the road or sidewalk ahead, while letting others see it. There are three speed settings, which is especially convenient if you want to throttle the speed for a newbie rider or a child. Although that child cannot be too small, as this model is definitely sized for adults. Height is not adjustable. I’m a relatively average height and it fits me comfortably.

The scooter gets 25 miles per charge, although I haven’t tested mileage because there’s no odometer on the built-in LED display. There is a speedometer and battery life indicator that are clearly visible under direct sunlight. There’s a nice-and-loud bell on the left handlebar. And there’s also a companion smartphone app that lets you see how far each ride is — albeit in km instead of miles. The app also has a cruise control toggle, which will come in handy on longer rides when I don’t necessarily want to keep pressing down the throttle with my thumb.

The scooter can be quickly folded for easy storage or to tote around in a car trunk when needed. It’s a blast to ride around the neighborhood. I’ve been using it as a much faster alternative to walking to friend’s houses or the local park. But I could also see using it to go run nearby errands. No scooter I’ve tested has been perfect, but this one seems to check all the boxes just fine.
