E-scooter hire company to start Cork scheme and create 25 jobs Leave a comment

Cork should have an e-scooter rental network in place by the end of this year as a second major operator announces plans for Leeside.

Bolt, who claim to be Europe’s leading “urban mobility platform” say they are ready to place electric scooter stands in Cork City, which will be accessed via their app on a 24/7 basis.

The company also plans to hire 25 staff in Cork to run and maintain the network, as part of plans to create 130 jobs nationwide as they place over 10,000 e-scooters in Irish cities.

The news follows on from a second major European operator – TIER – starting talks with Cork City Council as well as community groups in the city on their plans to start an e-scooter hire network on Leeside.

And with plans well advanced for both companies – Cork City could have two competing e-scooter rental networks by the end of this year.

A spokesperson for Bolt told CorkBeo they are already successfully operating a taxi-hailing service in Dublin and their plan for Ireland’s cities is to have a range of “urban travel options” available through one app – so users in Cork could choose between a taxi, e-scooter or e-bike.

And the company says such a service in Cork could reduce the use of private cars in the city by over 10 percent soon after starting – rising to more as the network expanded.

Luke Mackey, Ireland Country Manager for Bolt said, “Our data from similar-sized cities shows that offering micro-mobility services like scooters alongside ride-hailing can replace up to 11% of car trips under 3km.

“Integration with the wider public transport system would only increase the value add to the public who can mix between cars, micro mobility, rail and bus in one app.”

“In the future, journeys can begin from the multi-modal Bolt app. Some trips make more sense on an e-scooter, some in a taxi. Bolt can combine them all, and you don’t have to use multiple apps for each service and type of vehicle. Once a person enters their destination in our app, we’ll recommend different ways to get there based on time, price or weather.”

“Bolt is ready to provide 10,000 of its proprietary, 4th generation, sustainable e-scooters to Irish towns and cities.”

Bolt scooters are currently available in 15 countries and 53 cities across Europe and Cork will soon be joining that list.
