Electric scooter rider cops £1,000 bill for trip around Northampton town centre Leave a comment

Magistrates landed a Northampton man with a whopping £1,000 bill after he was caught riding a private electric scooter in Northampton town centre.

Jaynes Mistry, 27, was fined a total of £880 for having no licence and no insurance when he rode the Epic Stuff Electric Scooter on the Drapery in July last year.

Privately owned e-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles — PLEVs — and can only legally be ridden on private land.

They are treated as motor vehicles, however, and if they are used on roads, pavements or any public place electric scooters are subject to the same legal requirements as any motor vehicle with the need for a driving licence and insurance.

Mistry, of North Paddock Court — who did not attend the hearing at Northampton Magistrates Court — was also ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £88.00 plus £90 prosecution costs, and had eight penalty points added to his driving record.
