SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A man was killed early Saturday morning in a collision involving an electric bicycle, South San Francisco police said.

Officers responded at around 3:35 a.m. to a report of an electric bicycle rider down in the 600 block of Grand Avenue, police said.

Officers attempted to provide life-saving treatment and paramedics arrived shortly afterward but 55-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The man was riding westbound on Grand Avenue when he collided with a parked vehicle and was thrown from his bike, police said.

He was wearing an unpadded “novelty” helmet according to police.

No other vehicles are believed to be involved in the crash, but police said “it appears alcohol may have been a contributing factor.”

The man’s name was withheld.
